Narrowboat 'Idling By No.2' cruising the waterways of France.

News for March 2007

Our last monthly message was sent from the South of France, Pomerols. We still have strong memories of the spectacular bridge that we visited at Millau. We watched the building of that bridge when we travelled south  for camping holidays. Whilst in the south we took advantage of visiting some "old haunts" like Beziers, Agde and Sete. We had lunch at Sete, good value as ever with the set menus, and were there mid afternoon watching the fishing boats returning to port. There were an enormous amount of  seagulls flying around the boats waiting to swoop down to capture tasty morsels. It has to be acknowledged that we are always attracted to water and boats wherever we go.

On our departure from Pomerols we incorporated visits to French friends and on our return to Epinal took advantage of having a rented car to go to Nancy to buy the  annual vignette (licence) for the boat. There is a reduction in price if bought before the 31st March. The one way system to find VNF (equivalent to BWB) threw us at first but by asking directions from passers by we managed to sort ourselves out. Soon after the return to Epinal Diane did a quick trip to England to catch up with her great niece, Kate, thriving well and full of smiles.

It was good to return to our winter routine, shopping in the market, collecting the reserved newspaper in 'La Presse'. During this month we have welcomed visitors from England, Barbara and Roger (Sister and brother in law of Diane) for a long weekend. They arrived at Epinal and a white world! There were a few centimetres of snow lying on the ground. The snow was short lived and by Sunday morning there was little to be seen. However, on our journey to Strasbourg, a lovely city, we saw quite a lot of snow on high ground. As the roads were clear driving was not a problem but the scenery was enhanced by the whiteness of certain areas. It is our third visit to Strasbourg and we see something new each time.

Now we are thinking about boating again. It is going to be with some sadness that we take our leave of Epinal but we are keen to explore new areas for boating. At the moment we are planning to leave 9th April heading for Toul, Givet, into Belgium and then back into France.  Watch this space because nothing is in tablets of stone and that is the joy of having the freedom to travel depending on what we see and what we like, decisions made as we go, happy days!
